How To Sync Two Songs Together While Beatmatching

sync_Button_For_DJ_ControllerThis post is not about using the “sync” button, but understanding how to sync two songs together while beatmatching.  I discourage the use of the “sync” button, unless you understand how to sync two songs together while beatmatching without the “sync” button.

Many people think the “sync” button is for fakers, however I do not believe this is the case.  In fact, famous DJs such as Daft Punk, Richie Hawtin (Plastikman), and other DJs who use set ups or programs such as Ableton Live use similar functions as the “sync” button.  However, these DJs know how to DJ without the “sync” button, which is important in understanding how to sync two songs together while beatmatching.  So I will not be talking about how to use the sync button, but actually explaining how to sync two songs together while beatmatching without a sync button.

When people ask me how to sync two songs together while beatmatching, I always have to go through the steps and explanations. So, I thought I would create this article for people to reference in order know how to sync two songs together while beatmatching.   So, it is here.  This is how to sync two songs together while beatmatching:

Syncing songs together is essential with beatmatching. In essence, syncing is beatmatching. Understanding this is crucial in knowing how to sync two songs together while beat matching.

Xone_4d_DJ–Mixer_how_to_DJ_quicklyWhat you are doing is taking two songs with similar BPMs (Beats Per Minute), and adjusting the tempo (or playback speed) of the tracks so they are equal. If you took two house records, that were completely synced with each other, and started both of them on “the one” at the exact same time, they would still be in sync even three minutes in. You could tell this by listening to the kick drum of each track. Both of the kick drums of each track would be hitting the exact time 3 minutes into the track as they were when you started them together.

Now, that’s all fine and dandy, but in order to start knowing how to sync two songs together while beatmatching, you will need two songs with similar BPMs. Once you get these two songs, you can begin your process on how to sync two songs together while beatmatching.

Say your two songs are 3 beats per minute apart. So the first track (Track A) is at 130 BPM, and the second track (Track B) is at 133 BPM. What you need to do when understanding how to sync two songs together while beatmatching is make these two tracks equal. You do this by adjusting the tempo, using the pitch fader on your turntable, CDJ, or DJ program. When knowing how to sync two songs together while beatmatching, you could increase Track A by +3 BPM (moving Track A’s pitch fader +3 BPM), or decrease Track B by -3 BPM (moving Track B’s pitch fader -3 BPM). If you were to take the former approach, Track A would increase to 133 BPM when would then equal the BPM of Track B. If you were to take the latter approach, Track B would become 130 BPM – the same BPM of Track A.

To further this explanation, check out this diagram:

how_to_beatmatch_two_songs_how_to_sync_two_songs_while_beatmatchingThis shows three instances: “tempo mismatch,” “phase mismatch,” and “beat-matched.”  “Beat-matched” is what you want, so keep this in mind!  There are three groups each has two lines.  Each line represents a track, and the lines on these tracks represent a beat.  You will need to know this to understand when I explain these three groups.

Tempo mismatch: This is when you have two songs that are not even adjusted to the same tempo or BPM.  Recall above when I said to match the 130 BPM to 133 BPM, or vice versa… if you had not done this yet, this is what your songs would line up like.  You can see that only two of the lines between the two songs are lined up on top of each other, while the others are not.  These two beats are matched, however the rest are not.  In order to properly understand how to sync two songs together while beatmatching, you must know that we want all of these beats to be lined up between both songs.

Phase mismatch: You will notice that each of the beats are the same distance apart, however they are not in the correct phase.  This is an important concept when understanding how to sync two songs together while beatmatching.  This could be fixed by nudging the first track (the above track) forward, or nudging the second track (the below track) back, so each beat of the first song is matched with each beat of the second song.  You can see how this is done properly in the third example, which I will now explain.

Beat-matched: This is what you want to achieve when understanding how to sync two songs together while beatmatching.  Both of these songs’ beats are lined up perfectly with each other and if you play them together, you will be able to hear that they sound in sync with each other.

When I was understanding how to sync two songs together while beatmatching I had tough time understanding this concept, but this is CRUCIAL if you want to rock out to big crowds and live the DJ lifestyle you have always dreamed of. You can do it! You now know how to sync two songs together while beatmatching. Go out there and do it!
